This unit applies to those working autonomously as challenge ropes managers who have ultimate responsibility for ensuring the safety of a low ropes course, and the development and provision of operational procedures for the conduct of activities on the low ropes elements and course.

This may include those working for private outdoor adventure companies, volunteer organisations, not for profit organisations, government agencies, or group instructors in outdoor education programs.

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage and maintain a challenge low ropes course, including linked courses, courses with independent elements and elements used as initiative activities. This unit does not cover the training of staff.

No licensing, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

Evidence of the following is essential:

conducts routine inspections of low ropes course and surrounding area and implements safe installation techniques, practices and hardware

develops and reviews operational procedures for the set up, operation and maintenance of low ropes courses

devises methods of promptly informing course users and facilitators of changes made to elements and procedures and determines staffing and training requirements for low ropes courses

documents safety and emergency procedures required for use at the site and aims, risks and spotting techniques appropriate for each element

consults with challenge ropes course installation and maintenance specialists to determine course maintenance procedures where required.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure application of detailed knowledge of low ropes course elements and maintenance requirements to develop and review comprehensive procedures.

Assessment must ensure access to:

a minimum of two different low ropes courses, each with a minimum of five elements,

equipment required for the maintenance of a low ropes course

challenge ropes course installation and maintenance specialists, where required

resources such as relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures to assist in the development of operational and maintenance procedures.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures to enable adequate management and maintenance of low ropes course

observation of safe inspection and thorough maintenance and installation of course equipment and elements

review of devised operational and maintenance procedures, and course maintenance records and reports

third-party reports from a supervisor detailing performance.

Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended,
